Title: Legalized
Characters: JD/Perry
Rating: G
Description: A conversation that took place about half an hour ago, today, May 15, 2008.
Perry frowned, glancing down at his pager, feeling a sudden stab of alarm when he read the message there:
Call me RIGHT NOW!! JD
"Shit," he muttered, and Carla looked up, arching her eyebrow at him. He shook his head. "Can you finish up here?" he asked, nodding at the patient they'd just extubated.
"No problem," she assured him, and he nodded his thanks, snapping off his gloves and hurrying out of the room. Once in the hall, he pulled out his cell, and hit speed dial 1, trying not to imagine what could have happened that would make his husband freak out like that.
It barely rang once. "Hello?"
"Hey, babe," Perry said, alarm growing at the breathless note in JD's voice. God, what was going on? Was it Jack...? "What's going on? Are you okay?"
"Wanna get married? Legally?"
Perry arched his eyebrows. "What?" he said, mind still reeling a little. "What're you talking about?"
"The California Supreme Court just legalized it!" JD replied, sounding as if he were literally bouncing. "I got the e-mail, and it's legal now, and we can and no more domestic partnership, actual marriage and you'll really be my husband legally, not just 'cause we say and when do you want to?"
Perry blinked, then grinned, broadly, causing a passing intern to glance at him warily before scooting around him. "How about tomorrow?" he said, hearing his own voice crack. "Damn, Newbie, you'd better not be joking!"
"Would I joke about this?" JD asked, and Perry could easily picture his enormous grin. "And I was thinking...how about our anniversary? Is this a good first anniversary present or what?"
"So Monday," Perry said, trying to remember his schedule. "God, that's perfect. Can you call and schedule? Shit, babe..." he slumped against the nurse's station, running a hand over his scruff of a beard and blinking rapidly. "This...this is..."
"I'm on it," JD replied, still sounding giddy. "And...yeah! It's finally...we can...I...God, Perry, I can't believe it!"
Perry didn't even try to stop the tears now. "Me neither, kiddo," he whispered. "Hey. I'm gonna see if Anderson can cover the rest of my shift. You at home?"
"On my way," JD replied, his voice softening a little. "I ran out and got us champagne and some sparkling cider for Jack. There's a big public celebration at San Vicente and Santa Monica Boulevards at seven tonight...we're going, right?"
"Definitely," Perry said, grinning so hard his face hurt. "I'll see you soon."
"Perry?" JD's grin was purely audible. "I love you."
"I love you too, John," Perry whispered.
