It's fun to make Perry be all romantic. We figure JD is a hopeless romantic, and now that Perry's in love with him, he's gotta give him something. ;)
As for that first comment--"once heleft the foothills" is technically an adverbial phrase, you're right, so it would normally take a comma. I opted not to put one there, however, in light of the fact that we already had two other independent subordinate clauses in the sentence (technically making it a run-on, but there's artistic license for you) and I didn't want to compromise the readability by having too many commas in one sentence. Thanks, though. :)
